Two White university students who sparked controversy in South Africa last year by making a video featuring a mock initiation of five black staff members into hostel activities, including eating a stew that looked like it had been urinated in, have been reinstated in the name of reconciliation.
The University of the Free State students, Roelof Malherbe and Schalk van der Merwe, were banned from the campus after the video surfaced in early 2008. The pair made the video with two other students, Johnny Roberts and Danie Grobler, to protest integration of campus life.
In exclusive interviews with The Right Perspective, it was learned that many incidents of Black-on-White violence and intimidation occurred on campus as the result of integration, with school authorities turning a blind eye to matter.
A charge of assault, for allegedly urinating in a mixture the workers had to drink, has been dropped against the men. They face crimen injuria, defined in South African common law as “unlawfully, intentionally and seriously impairing the dignity of another.”
Despite having apologized “for any embarrassment … may have unintentionally caused” after the video became an international controversy, South Africa’s ministry of higher education bitterly complained about the students’ reinstatement.
“One of the problems is that the men have not disclosed what happened,” said Ranjeni Munusamy, a spokeswoman for the ministry. “They want to give people the impression that it was just a prank, without any form of remorse.
“Also, there was no consultation with the victims before this decision was made. There has been no apology. No financial reward can make up for the humiliation they suffered.”
Munusamy claims the Black staff members who took part in the video remain traumatized by the incident. They have requested new uniforms and to be relocated to different work areas to help erase their memories of the incident.
