US officials have caught a German ship transporting ammunition from Iran to Syria, presumably to arm either the Syrian army of the militant Islamic group Hezbollah.
The eight freight containers were found on the Hansa India that contained arms. Seven of the containers were full of 7.62 millimeter ammunition suitable for Kalashnikov rifles, while an eighth was full of cartridges suitable for the manufacture of additional rounds.
US officials have pointed out that the delivery is in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1747, which prohibits arms shipments either into or out of Iran.
The Hansa India is registered to the Hamburg-based shipping company Leonhardt & Blumberg. The German government intervened after the ship was detained by American forces and was allowed to continue to Malta, where the containers were secured.
German newspaper Der Spiegel quotes one German diplomat as calling the incident an “embarrassing affair.”
