In a Saturday night speech to America’s largest gay rights group, Barack Obama vowed to make good on his campaign promises to them, including putting an end to the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
“This fight continues now and I’m here with the simple message: I’m here with you in that fight,” Obama told the applauding audience at a dinner for the Human Rights Campaign.
“We should not be punishing patriotic Americans who have stepped forward to serve this country,” Obama said. “I’m working with the Pentagon, its leadership and the members of the House and Senate on ending this policy, legislation that has been introduced in the House to make this happen, I will end ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ That’s my commitment to you.”
Obama’s promise comes in sharp contrast to his request last June to the Supreme Court of the Untied States to reject a legal challenge to the Clinton-era military policy.
Obama told the audience he also backs the rights of same-sex couples and passage of “Hate” Crimes legislation that protects gays. Obama also vowed to sign a “Hate” Crime bill that recently passed the Congress.
Obama’s speech was followed by a performance by pop singer Lady Gaga, who is popular with the gay community and is rumored to be either a hermaphrodite or shemale.
