Forget communion wafers and wine. It could be chitlins and Colt 45 at your local Catholic mass in the future, as a prominent African cardinal says the election of Barack Obama to President of the United States means the next Pope could be Black.
Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Ghana made the proclamation Monday during a press conference that was part of three-week Vatican meeting on the challenges the Catholic Church faces in Africa.
It is in the Dark Continent that the Catholic Church is experiencing its biggest growth: Catholics have grown from 55 million in 1978 to 146 million in 2007 there.
The Catholic Church broke a 455-year history of Italian Popes in 1978 by electing Pope John Paul II in 1978. He was followed by German-born Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. But a non-European Pope may be a stretch, according to some.
