Barack Obama has asked Accidental Governor David Patterson to step out of the New York Governor’s race, reports The New York Times.
The decision was proposed by an Obama adviser and based on Patterson’s dismal approval rating, which places him in a double-digit deficit against Democrat rival Andrew Cuomo. Obama reportedly approved of the suggestion.
The belief is that an extended primary battle with Patterson running could hurt other Democrats running for state Congressional seats, and may even damage Kirsten Gillibrand‘s chances of holding onto her newly-appointed Senate seat.
It is also believed that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will run for governor and will put a strong competition for the eventual Democrat nominee.
Queens Democrat Gregory Meeks, who has a strong relationship with the Obama White House, reportedly passed the message along to Patterson.
