New Memorial To Jews Who Fought With Boer During Second Boer War

A new South African monument is going up to honor 13 Jews who fought and died with the Boer Republics during the Second Boer War of 1899-1902.

The memorial will honor, in both Afrikaans and Hebrew, Harry Spanier, the first Jew to die on the side of the Boer during the war. The plaque will appear on a large boulder and list the names of the other Jews who fought and died for the Boer.

A memorial honoring the Jews who fought for the British was put up in a local synagogue shortly after the Anglo-Boer war ended in 1902, but no thought was ever given to honoring those Jews who fought with the Boer until now.

The memorial will be erected next to the Burgher memorial on Platrand (also known as Caesar’s Camp) at Ladysmith in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

Of the 13 Jews known to have fought and died for the Boer, 9 were killed in action, one was killed by friendly fire, and 3 died in British prison camps.

The British attempted a genocide of the Boer by rounding up Boer women and children into the prison camps, then intentionally spread disease and fed them food laced with glass. News of the war crimes caused a tremendous scandal at the time for Great Britain.
