A plan to combat crime before the start of the 2010 Fifa World Cup games in South Africa has taken a massive setback after it was revealed that 43 volunteers for an anti-crime initiative had criminal records, with one volunteer currently under arrest for housebreaking and theft.
The announcement came from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu, as he was addressing a graduating group of anti-crime volunteers with the KwaZulu-Natal Volunteer Social Crime Prevention Programme (VSCPP) over the weekend.
“You are real ambassadors of a fight against crime,” Mchunu told the graduates. “Your past criminal records are clean. Do your work diligently and be of service to your communities and your country.”
The 43 youths, who have been fired from the program, were screened and recruited by the KZN Department of Community Safety and Liaison. Volunteers are trained in first aid, self-defense and understanding social crime.
Political group the Democratic Alliance blasted the screening process of the program in a press release. “Clearly the initial screening process was entirely inadequate and there needs to be accountability for what is a shocking oversight on the part of departmental officials,” DA KZN Community Safety spokesperson Sizwe Mchunu said.

43 out of… how many? Please put things in proper perspective. 43 out of 43 – yes something’s wrong. 43 out of 2lko000 – a small fixable glitch in the system.
