Alex "Gemini" Makarczyk
A member of The Guardian Angels critically injured in an on-duty street brawl last week has resorted to begging online to pay off his hospital bills after being left high-and-dry by the organization, The Right Perspective has learned.
Alex “Gemini” Makarczyk and two other Angels were sent to hospital on the night of August 8th after rushing to save a woman who was allegedly being sexually assaulted on the streets of Hollywood, California. The brawl escalated to include 9 Angels and 25 men. Makarczyk, who is leader of the Guardian Angels LA franchise, was sent to ICU at Cedar Siani hospital, and the two other Angels were treated and released.
Since then, a Facebook page has been set up to collect donations for Makarczyk’s hospital bills. Despite voluntarily putting their lives on the line for the group, the so-called “crime fighting” organization does not insure or provide its members health coverage. In several interviews with Guardian Angels past and present, The Right Perspective has also learned that new recruits must sign a disclaimer waiving the organization of any liabilities before going on patrol. Members must even pay for their own berets and Guardian Angel t-shirts.
This is in sharp contrast to volunteer police auxiliary groups, who do get the full backing of their local law enforcement agencies.
Despite insistence from Guardian Angel founder Curtis Sliwa and Fort Pierce, Florida franchise leader Steve Horton that the group works only as “eyes and ears for the police,” its members routinely engage in physical altercations with alleged suspects, even videotaping their exploits and putting them up on YouTube.
It is not known how much money has been collected so far for Makarczyks’s hospital bills.

Curtis Sliwa reminds me of that cult leader, Jim Jones, who murdered his cult followers after they wised-up to his fraud and were about to desert him. While you may disrespect Mr. Silwa, please refrain from calling the men who were injured “stooges,” “lowlifes,” and “morons.” They are doing what they can to make a difference.
Wow … I was there, and I’ve been getting calls from Mr. Sliwa every single day since, to make sure that the Angels involved are well taken care of, in every way. Indeed, one Angel was injured in a bit of a freak accident during a 3-to-1 fight.
His fighting skills have been tested plenty, and they’re plenty good enough – as are the other Angels, including those who made the arrests that night, and the smallest one out that night, who managed to take two big guys out of the fight by HERself.
Mr. Sliwa has been personally concerned from the very first moment – never leaving anybody to fend for themselves on this issue. We’re all pretty darn satisfied with the way he’s handling this situation, actually. Thanks for your opinion, but I’m supplying you with some facts – from the moment it happened (I was there) to the contact with Mr. Sliwa (which I’m receiving).
By the way, you’re also completely wrong about the major assumption of your argument: that anybody has looked for help with the medical bills. Sure, it was a nice gesture, and we’re glad to learn that a lot of people care about helping when another person gets hurt while making a difference in the world, but it turns out that the medical bills are not in any way a financial burden. Hooray for health insurance, which is already taking care of things – exactly as it’s supposed to happen.
For someone with such strong convictions, it’s interesting that you have such little working knowledge. We are fortunate that haven’t had to spend our own money as you’ve asserted, and donations are not all in cash, and what donations that do come in are handled in full accordance with the law, and none of it has ever been taken away from the local level – we support the mission of the Angels directly.
Do you -really- think that the big, well-known charities (you mentioned one by name) don’t pay their organizers well? Some of them make their salaries public knowledge; take a look next time you boldly offer up slander. We are by no means the most financially rewarded charity (or directors of charitable organizations) around. One quite famous one pays out over 80% of their donations to their staff members! Please rethink your accusations.
We’re not working as some low-brow army of some puppet master as you seem to imagine it. I am amazed that some folks are so bold on the internet, and comfortable degrading those who are bold in person, in the face of harm, for the sake of doing something good for others. I really should not have allowed myself get so offended, because really, I have 2 business to run and a degree to finish, and the minutes that I am taking to do this should be spent on those endeavors. Dont take these jokers too seriously If you look at earlier posts you can see there flawed thought process can be pretty much summed up as “If I’m faced with facts I should just call the person giving the facts a Sliwa stooge” or some other name like a child. Actually, make that a small child as any kid past 10 could think up better and more original insults than these guys.
Here in Davenport one of our police officers was recently injured trying to arrest a man who had attacked a volunteer at a free meal shelter and a number of officers were injured at a bar fight. Their training didn’t prevent them from getting hurt but like us, they voluntarily put themselves out there to try to protect people who cant defend themselves. Guardian Angels are not the answer but can, if properly trained and used, can be part of the answer by acting WITH the police and occasionally stepping in when police can not get there in time. We always have to remember there is always someone out there who is bigger, better trained, stronger, or just meaner than you.
No one in our chapter would have hesitated either in your situation. Our chapter has, on occasion had non GAs actually jump in to help us. Our patrol was at our local skate park a few weeks ago when some thugs started beating a guy with baseball bats on the other side of the park. There were only 3 of us at the time and we were outnumbered by 2 or 3 to 1 but we went in. A number of guys who we had been talking to previously also ran to help us making it an even up fight and the attackers jumped in their cars and raced away. We started first aid on the guy who had been attacked, but even though 911 was called within a minute of the start of the attack and we told the dispatcher there were injuries including a head injury it took more than 20 minutes for the police to respond. Only 2 officers showed up, no EMS had been dispatched. By this time the guy who had been attacked didn’t feel like waiting any longer so one of his friends drove him to the hospital. The bottom line is that the police were not there and we were, even after being called they didn’t show up until long after the situation had died down and the potentially serious medical situation was completely ignored by the 911 dispatchers. We made a few friends that night because they saw us running to help and saw the police not seeming to care too much.

As far as the Phoenix sniper attacks, we have made it quite clear we are not the police Our patrols were to put additional people on the street and act as obvious targets to keep the shooters from shooting at innocent people Unfortunately they didn’t take the bait They also never shot at cops, only people who were not on guard and ready to respond
In the Virginia Beltway Sniper case we tried the same thing and some also volunteered to pump gas for people too scared to get out of their cars Again the cowards doing the shooting didn’t take the bait and continued to only shoot at those not ready to respond
As far as calling us brownshirts I don’t see the connection The SA or Sturmabteilung (Storm Detachment or Stormtroopers) were a paramilitary arm of the Nazi party and were used by Adolf Hitler as his personal troops before he rose to power to attack his enemies.
The Guardian Angels are a volunteer organization that try to assist the police within existing laws by using foot patrols in high crime areas where the police lack the personnel to keep a better presence and the people living there do not call the police for anything because of fear of reprisals or just don’t care what happens to others. To our department a car zipping by any given block at 25 MPH or more 2 times a day is a pretty good presence We spend 10-15 minutes walking past the block greeting the residents and other pedestrians That was the original concept of policing and is now being pushed as community policing. Get the cops out of the cars and into the neighborhoods on foot so the people living there get to know the officers as individuals, not just another cop. We also are trained to assist in medical emergency’s by rendering first aid and calling EMS when needed. We help anyone in need and accept anyone interested in joining regardless of race, religion, nationality, political views, or sexual identity. I don’t think the brownshirts could say the same.
You do have a point in calling my story’s anecdotal, but your constantly false statements regarding us begging and panhandling to send money to Curtis could be considered libel. Two of your most common arguments are that we beg for money to send to Curtis and that we do not give receipts It has been pointed out that panhandling and begging is against the GA rules as published in the organizations handbook. The handbook for chapter leaders has a section regarding donations that say any donation over $10 requires a receipt and monthly reports are supposed to be sent in reporting all money in and out. I do suppose that technically you could use the defense that you hold the honest belief that those statements are true so I’ll just let those go but those rules are on the books and have been since the mid 90s at least. What came before that I cant comment on since our chapter only started in 2007
Yes we buy our own uniforms but that is not any different than a number of places I have worked over the years so what is your problem exactly with that?

I could care less what you think of Curtis as he can defend himself. What he did in the early 80s regarding the false police reports was wrong so I do agree with you there.

I support all that is good. I know the Angels are putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the citizens, as evidenced in this article regarding the significant injuries received while doing so. What are the Angel criticizers doing that is good?
