After a little more than a year on the streets, the Millville, New Jersey franchise of The Guardian Angels has dwindled from 13 members down to a mere three, and former members are considering their own neighborhood watch due to concerns about the direction and decision-making of the vigilante group.
Franchise leader Robert Long was stripped of his duties without reason on July 13, causing several Angels to quit out of protest.
A similar situation occurred last fall, when several Angels were kicked out after complaining about the leadership. Former member Jerry Loatman, who was among those removed, said no reason was given for the move.
Attempts to reach Guardian Angels patrol director Benjamin “EQ” Garcia, who is responsible for the pairing down, were unsuccessful.
After opening with a lot of press coverage and fanfare, Guardian Angels franchises have a history of closing down quicker than a five-dollar whorehouse raided by the cops. Examples of this include Atlanta, Georgia, Edmonton, Canada, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Calgary, Alberta, Norwalk, Connecticut, and Boston, Massachusetts.

I am the Chapter Leader in Edmonton, Alberta,Canada. Please check your facts before writing things that are not true, unless of course you’d rather not have facts get in the way of a sensationalist rant. The Edmonton and Calgary Chapters have not closed, for everyone’s information this is absolutely NOT true. Whatever your personal feelings about Curtis may be, there are many people, especially seniors and other vulnerable people, who are very thankful that we are on the streets. So why exactly would you and others not want to have extra eyes and ears on the street to help vulnerable people???
Saxon: Do it yourselves or through local police auxiliaries. Curtis is pimping you off like cheap hookers. He makes millions through expensive motivational speaking fees while you pound the pavement. Have you ever thwarted one crime?
If you have, even one, I’ll concede that you are doing some good but if it is just to wear that red assinine uniform to pick up chicks then go home andget somesleep. It’s cold outside.
Philoctetes: There are many ways people can help their community, some of us have chosen to do so as Guardian Angels. Not sure if you are aware but Guardian Angels come from all walks of life…current and former members of law enforcement, current and former military people, professionals, tradespeople, students, retired folks, men and women of all ages, color, and cultural backgrounds. We choose to volunteer our time and go on safety patrols, speaking fees that Curtis may or may not be collecting are simply irrelevant.
And yes, we here in Edmonton, have been in situations where we prevented opposing groups from getting physical with each other..avoiding potential injuries and perhaps senseless deaths. We have assisted ambulance attendants when a large male became belligerent and then attempted to get physical with them. We did so without harm to the individual and when police arrived they only needed to chat with the two female attendants for a few minutes and were able to go on to deal with more serious issues that Saturday night. The two ambulance attendants were very thankful that we were there. We had in fact witnessed the man falling, called 911, and provided first aid until the ambulance arrived.
As for wearing the uniform to “pick up chicks”, this is a violation of Guardian Angels rules. In our Chapter this would be grounds for expulsion, as I’m sure it would be elsewhere as well.
Please don’t let your dislike or hatred of Curtis blind you to the fact that there are thousands of people who willingly put themselves at risk to help their communities, local police, and others who are doing what they can to make the streets just a little safer…even if only for the short time we are actually on the street. If you could be with us when we have seniors, disabled people, or any of the many people who come up to us to thank us….you might view things a little differently.
Wouldn’t it be ironic if one day some Guardian Angels came upon someone you love or care about deeply being sexually assaulted, swarmed, robbed, or even just harassed?
Would you prefer them to leave your loved one to suffer at the hands of people that have no respect for their dignity or health and safety?
I would hope you or those you care for would never have to experience this, but unfortunately there are people out there who would see a senior as an easy target, or would swarm someone just for fun, or violate someone to satisfy their own desires.
If all of the time spent walking the streets could prevent just one person from being attacked, or robbed, or violated, or maimed for life, or killed, ….I honestly feel all the time and effort and the abuse from critics would be worth it.

Our chapter in Davenport is running well and we have become partners with local law enforcement and the community at large. We all have jobs and do this to give back to our city and to help people feel safe enough to walk down the street again. We have shut down a number of drug houses by simply being a presence and preventing the customers from buying their drugs without being identified. We have assisted people with medical emergencies and accidents and are working to start up Jr Angel and Urban Angel programs which have a PROVEN track record of keeping kids off of drugs, out of gangs, and in schools.
I have watched a few of the members who were with me at the start mature into responsible young adults who might not have without the self esteem given to them through their activities.
As far as Curtis using events to move an agenda, he is not alone in that but at least his agenda gets results by getting people involved in crime prevention and community service rather than getting people to view another race, religion, or sexuality as being somehow wrong.
I have no problems with my self respect and I don’t need to insult you or anyone who feels the way you do about our organization as that is what free will is along with freedom of speech. Actually its kind of fun to see what some of your followers type, sort of like reading the weekly world news stories.

While I still believe in the basic principles behind the Guardian Angels, I have to agree that the leadership is basicly rotten. Don’t get me wrong; some chapters are doing things right, keeping things legal and professional…Davenport, IA is a good example of how the Angel chapters SHOULD function. Unfortunately, too many chapters are breaking the rules outlined in their own handbook. I know, because I was the Assistant Chapter Director for Rochester, MN, training under the Minneapolis, MN Director, Ron Halling. I, too, was kicked out without a valid reason given. My crime: Confronting a couple of members who were coming to training meetings and patrol practice drunk…..unfortunately, they were both good friends of Ron Halling. There are some good people in the Rochester, MN Guardian Angels, but unless the leadership changes, this group is another one doomed to failure.
