Axed: Todd and Don
Austin, Texas radio station KLBJ-AM has canceled its morning show “Todd and Don” after the team’s repeated reference to illegal aliens as “wetbacks” prompted a Hispanic activist group to threaten a boycott.
After hearing the team would no longer be heard on the station, the US Hispanic Contractors Association dropped its planned boycott of parent company Emmis Austin Radio, its six local stations and their advertisers.

KLBJ-AM was flooded with calls from angry Hispanics after the July 14 show, and news of the broadcast spun out-of-control in sanctuary-city Austin. In an effort to do damage control, Scott Gillmore, Emmis Austin Radio vice president and market manager, reached out to more than 30 local Hispanic leaders, including former Texas Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos and former Austin Mayor Gus Garcia.
Don Pryor, the half of “Todd and Don” who dared to utter the phrase “wetback” on the air, apologized the next day. “I frequently use sarcasm and satire in my humor,” Pryor said, adding that he assumed the audience knew he was being sarcastic. “The first mistake I made is using the term. It’s a highly offensive and outdated term that should never be used.” However, that was not enough for the US Hispanic Contractors Association. After a series of negotiations with the group, management agreed to cancel the show and suspend the morning team for two weeks without pay.
While two advertisers expressed their displeasure over the morning show verbiage to the station, Austin mortgage broker Chris Penders reports having lost US $30,000 in business from station listeners upset over Todd and Don getting axed. “What’s really outrageous here is we haven’t done anything wrong,” Penders said. “I explained that I don’t have any control over what those guys did over there.”
After announcing its intention to wage a boycott, the US Hispanic Contractors Association came under scrutiny itself for a video on its website mocking homosexuals. After recieving several complaints about the homophobic video, it was pulled from the website. The Hispanic activist group plans to speak with several gay rights groups next week about sensitivity to the LGBT community.
Todd Jefferies and Don Pryor had only been working together as a morning team for nine months. After the suspension, Jefferies will resume his news director duties at at the station and Pryor has been resigned to undisclosed off-air tasks.
While Pryor was the only one to have used the term “wetback,” Gillmore said both were suspended because they were both in a position to control the situation. “I think that neither employee is racist, but I think they made a very bad error in judgment in talking about the topic that was hurtful and inexcusable,” Gillmore told reporters.

Maybe next time they will no to be registered democrats, so they can get a free pass. One of our reps here in NY recently used the N word and there was barely a peep from the media or any black groups. I agree with the boycott. The term wetback is a derogatory term that has no place in polite society. I prefer the term SPIC.
I think everyone needs to get off their politically correct high horses, or pity pots as the case may be, and stop hindering the exercise of free speech.

I believe that everyone should stop listening to this station and protest. Maybe then the station manager will grow a spine and get these guys back and apologize to them for caving in to the idiot politically correct pigs in this country.

Firstly the beaners aren't descended from the Great Latin race! There is no such thing as "Latinos", only beaners! Some Hispanic racists are so hateful that they even deride their FELLOW Latinos who are NOT Hispanic. Some of them at my Brazilian friend’s Catholic church claim that she, the Brazlian priest and Brazilian parishioners are not REAL Latinos because they are PORTUGUESE, not Spanish ones. They scoff at the weekly Portuguese Mass and scorn Brazilian foods, clothes, and customs. Latinos of French, Italian, and Romanian descent are also attacked as “fake Latinos.”
Over reaction for words. An apology would have worked, everyone makes a mistake now and again, we are all human. You can call a white person anything you want, but a slur at a minority will get you fired or in prison.
I do NOT agree with the term they used, but get real, an apology would have helped.

When my maternal grandparents (Ukranian and Czech refugees from World War I and Communism) and my paternal grandparents and great-grandparents (Italian, French, and German), came LEGALLY to this country, they retained their native languages and cultures, but ON BECOMING AMERICANS, they EMBRACED the AMERICAN culture. They STILL spoke in their mother tongues as FAMILY or with FRIENDS who KNEW their languages (and those who are still around STILL do!) but DIDN’T expect EVERYTHING in THEIR languages, and NEVER demanded that AMERICANS LEARN their languages. My grandparents and great-grandparents ACCEPTED and LEARNED and USED ENGLISH for their FIRST language as AMERICANS. They were PROUD to BE Americans, and remained FOREVER grateful for the refuge, freedom, and opportunity America offered them. The REAL truth is that the folks who like to DISH it OUT with regard to OTHER races but CAN’T TAKE it when it comes to their OWN racial or ethinic group are racists. Racists are for their RACE or ETHNIC group FIRST and the COUNTRY SECOND! And because of THIS, racists are DOOMED to FAILURE!
