Despite being found guilty on 137 counts of tax violations, fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice, former Pennsylvania state senator Vincent J. Fumo, a Democrat, has been sentenced to less than half the court-recommended time for such offenses.
Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter of Federal District Court sentenced Fumo to only 55 months for ripping off tax payers and two non-profit agencies US $3.5 million because the Democrat had performed “exceptional” public service during 30 years of representing his South Philadelphia district.
Fumo has also been ordered to pay US $1.29 million in compensation to the Pennsylvania state senate.
In a tearful apology at his sentencing, Fumo, 66, told Judge Buckwalter that “I have given my life to my job, and it was fun,”and, “It was just to be able to help people. I did a lot of good for the 11 million people of Pennsylvania whether they know it or not.”
US prosecuting attorney Michael L. Levy, who called for a 15-year sentence for Fumo, said he was “disappointed” at the relatively-light sentence. There is a real question about whether it will deter corruption,” Levy said.

Murtha is the biggest crook in Congress, and he’s still at it. Heck I’d settle for a light sentence over more of the same.
He should have gotten the max sentence because he enriched himself while in office and violated the voters trust and confidence. Lets send a stronger message to all in public service !
^^^I agree.
The people who are supposed to represent us are certainly not interested in doing what the people want. Perhaps harsh penalties will send a message to up and coming politicians that behavior like this will not be tolerated. Personally, I’d like to see some of these politicians hung in the town square for all to see.
This thief gets only 55 months for his shameful deeds because Judge Buckwalter states he performed “exceptional” public service for 30 years.
I was not aware that stealing $3.5 million dollars is considered “exceptional” public service.
This fiend should have been given 20 years hard time at the least. This Judge Buckwalter needs to be given a cerebral examination.
I wonder what Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut would get for his crimes, 10 months?
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A GOVERMENT RULED BY A ” STUPID ” imported king ?
Another example of how elected govt. officials take care of themselves and not the people. Maybe someone can provide the name of one politician who honestly serves the people and not themselves. I can’t.
If OJ can get off, also the murderer of Rabbi Kahane, if schwartze juries can let off every schwartze criminal then it is about time that a white guy gets a little slack. mazel tov, m.f.’s
Can you believe that judge? I’ll say this, had he been a Republican, and this happened when Bush was president, the Democrats would still be screaming for the max sentence, and saying he got special treatment because he was a Republican. The judge sent the wrong message. When a public official violates his trust, he should be given the max to send a message. This sentence sends the wrong message.
