Citizens and the government of New Bedford, Massachusetts are up-in-arms against vigilante group the Guardian Angels, who are attempting to muscle their way in to start a franchise there.
“Why don’t the guardian angels either get a real job, or help raise money for social programs that may make a difference?,” said one New Bedford local on a community law enforcement message board. “I just pray that no cop gets hurt pulling the Guardian Angels out of a jam,” wrote another.
The vigilante group, led by Degenerate Liar Curtis Sliwa, was invited to New Bedford by failed politician Henry Bousquet, who previously ran for City Council, and local busybody Jerry Pinto, who recently directed Operation Clean Sweep in the city.

“I would love to be part of forming the first chapter in New Bedford,” Pinto said. “I would like to see the Guardian Angels working with the city and getting them involved with the community-oriented groups.”
The Angels tried to open a franchise there back in the 1980’s but failed miserably and haven’t been heard from since.
“Some of the Angels were just as much trouble as the people they were trying to look out for,” said Kenneth J. Resendes, president of the Bullard Street Neighborhood Association. “In some instances, they caused more problems than what they were trying to solve.”
“New Bedford doesn’t need the Guardian Angels, New Bedford needs its citizens to stand up, be responsible, be accountable, and help us with information that we need to either prevent crimes or solve crimes,” Mayor Scott Lang told reporters.
Mayor Lang did agree to a closed-door meeting with Sliwa, a point the Canarsie barker took as a positive sign. “If nothing more, he [Mayor Lang] takes a ‘wait-and-see’ attitude and lets the local candidates who will become Guardian Angels prove their stuff.”

Before his meeting with Mayor Lang, Sliwa and Boston franchise head Jason Santiago toured some of the more crime-prone areas of New Bedford. With them were a gaggle of reporters, who chronicled every move the two made.
Residents are shaken after four unrelated murders. Some believe Sliwa is looking to capitalize on the trauma for publicity and financial gain.
For his part, Sliwa toned down the rock ‘em, sock ‘em, crime-fighter rhetoric that made his group the faux saviors crime-weary New Yorkers embraced in the late 1970’s. “We can’t replace trained professional police officers but I think we could do a good job being a visual deterrent and assisting those cops who remain on the job,” the talk radio host said.

However, Mayor Lang remains unconvinced that the Sliwa and his red-beretted group have the right perspective on tackling the issue of crime.
“I’m going to let anybody act as a quasi-law-enforcement agent in the city of New Bedford, certainly,” Mayor Lang told reporters after his closed-door meeting with Sliwa. Mayor Lang added that the citizens of New Bedford should report anything suspicious to police. “They don’t need a red Beret to do it,” Lang said.
New Bedford Police Chief Ronald E. Teachman also expressed skepticism.
“I’ve gone to police leadership and academic conferences around the country, listened to the leaders of my profession to glean the best practices, and I never heard a chief of police mention the Guardian Angels,” Teachman said.

Mayor Lang and I rarely agree on a subject. However on the subject of the Guardian Angels we agree. What was interesting however were the grant sucking organizations that were invited to the meeting with the Mayor and the jack booted Creep.
