Akron, Ohio mayor Don Plusquellic has asked the FBI to investigate a June 27th attack by a gang of African-American youth on a White family while yelling, “we rule now” for possible civil rights violations and as a potential “hate crime” – and even Al Sharpton approves of it.
Marty Marshall, his wife and two children had just returned from watching fireworks at Firestone Park with two friends. Suddenly, a roving gang of 50 Black youths attacked them, chanting and shouting “we rule now,” “this is our world,” and ”this is a black world now.”
The phrases used by the Black gang as they beat on the White family are believed to be a reference to the US presidential victory of Barack Obama.
Akron police have independent eyewitness confirmation that the attack was done by 30-50 Black youth who attacked the White family without provocation and as they described.
”This was almost like being a terrorist act,” Marshall said. ”And we allow this to go on in our neighborhoods?”
Al Sharpton
The odd twist to this story comes from no other than civil rights activist Al Sharpton, who has made his career focusing on anti-Black bias crimes. Sharpton has personally condemned the attack and welcomed the FBI investigation. ”These teens need to be punished as much as any dumb redneck in white sheets,” said Richard Jones, a Sharpton spokesman based in Cleveland. ”Nobody should be attacked like this, whether they are black or white. These young men who are responsible need to be brought to justice.”
Akron police initially did not classify the incident as a “hate crime” because no other attacks happened that night, but did call in the department’s gang crime unit is involved with the investigation. ”We don’t know if it’s a known gang, or just a group of kids,” police Lt. Rick Edwards said.
Public outrage over the assault is believed to have prompted officials to rethink their position. Police told the Marshalls this week that they were unaware of the chants until reading about them in the newspaper, even though Marty’s wife Yvonne told p
olice and a detective about the chants used during the attack. That part of Mrs. Marshall’s account is nowhere to be found in a police report released by the department. A box to denote whether the attack was a hate crime is marked ”no bias/not applicable.”
”I was offended,” Yvonne Marshall said today of the follow-up interview with police. ”The detective who was questioning me made me feel like I’m a liar, or that we didn’t say it.”
”I know I told them that night that the group was saying, ‘This is our world.’ The whole interview made me feel very uncomfortable.”
In an interview today, Marty Marshall said police questioned him late Wednesday night about the attack and the chants he heard.
Marshall suffered a concussion and multiple bruises to his head and eye. “They were trying to take my head off my spine, basically,” he says. The construction worker spent five nights in the critical care unit at Akron General Medical Center. He now is afraid for his family and the thousands of dollars in medical bills he faces without insurance.
“I knew I was going to get beat, but not as bad as I did,” Marshall said. ”But I did it to protect my family. I didn’t have a choice. There was no need for this. We should be all getting along. But to me, it seems to be racist.”
Mayor Don Plusquellic
Mayor Plusquellic addressed the bias angle in his letter requesting FBI help. ”Accounts from the victim have indicated his assailants prefaced the attack with statements that could indicate a racial motivation to the crime,” Plusquellic wrote.
”Our priority is the same as it is with every crime: to find justice for the victims. But, it is also important that we carefully examine the motivation behind this attack and address that if necessary.”
In the statement, the mayor said the investigation into the attack will try to determine whether it ”falls under the category of a violation of civil-rights protection and should, consequently, be considered a ‘hate crime.’
”This ruling must, by law, be made by federal authorities, and therefore we are asking for their assistance in this matter. Make no mistake, most important is that the perpetrators are caught and brought to justice. I know that our police department is doing everything it can to aggressively pursue the investigation into this horrible incident.
”I ask our citizens to not confuse the technical/legal issue of a federally designated ‘hate crime’ with the fact that our police department is taking all necessary steps to solve this crime.”

Should the incident be investigated as a hate crime? If the preliminary finding merit such an investigastion as you and Sharpton demand, it falls under federal jurisdiction and the FBI will properly pursue that aspect as Akron police continue to attempt to apprehend the perpetrators.

WRONG. The Marshalls report the attack as having been 50 blacks. Eyewitnesses told the police it was anywhere from 30-50 blacks. -Admin
