Sadly the materialist narrative of history that is touted today tends to gloss over ethno-religious component in history. It over-emphasizes class struggle and takes at face value the claim that revolutionaries were motivated solely by materialist/class-related ambitions.

Jews felt threatened by the nationalist movements of the 19th century. Bolshevism, which emphasized class struggle, and Zionism, which promoted Jewish nationalism and self-determination were touted as an alternative to the indigenous European nationalist movements as these movements were considered to be hostile to Jewish ethnic interests.
