US Keeps Kyrgyzstan Base

After several months of intense negotiations, the US military has secured rights to use the Manas Air Base in Kyrgyzstan.

Future use of the base, which is a focal hub for military transport into Afghanistan, was up for grabs after the country said it would not renew a contract with the US last Feburary.

Rent for the base is going up from US $17.4 million to US $60 million for the year. Other changes include changing the name from an airbase to a transit center, and change security outside the base from US hands to the Kyrgyz.

The US will also donate US $36.6 million to expand the airport, and contribute tens of millions of dollars toward economic development and the fight against drug trafficking.

The new lease must still be approved by the Kyrgyz parliament, which is expected to do so. The old lease on the base expired August 18.
