Google Maps’ popular Street View feature has helped Dutch police arrest two Muslim immigrants who assaulted a 14-year-old Dutch boy in what the victim is calling a “hate crime.”
The 14-year-old Dutch boy, whose name has not been released due to his age, was robbed of his bike and 165 euros ($230,£140) last year while riding the streets of Groningen last year.
Then, several days ago, the boy was using Google Maps Street View, which allows users to see a literal, three-dimensional, real-life view of city streets. On the street the boy claimed his attack took place, he saw himself moments before the attack took place, riding his bike and the two Muslim assailants approaching him from behind.

“For us, it is unique,” said Groningen police spokesman Paul Heidanus. “For us, it is unique.”
Google complied with police requests to unblur the faces in the picture so the alleged attackers – who turned out to be Muslim twin brothers – could be prosecuted.
“You must tell Google clearly why you want them,” Heidanus said of the photo request. In this case, “the photo could provide an important contribution to solving a crime.”
Prosecutors will now decide whether to charge the suspects, whose identities were not released.
Even though the Dutch boy claims the two Muslims accosted him because of his race, it is not clear if police will prosecute the attack as a “hate crime.”
