A South African school’s quest to retain Afrikaans as the medium of instruction is based on its holding on to “Afrikaans domination in imitation of racial practices” of the past, claims a local politician.
Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in Mpumalanga, Regina Mhaule, made the claim against Hoërskool Ermelo, a school in her province.
Hoërskool Ermelo recently won a ruling from the South African Supreme Court of Appeal, which states that schools’ governing bodies have the exclusive right to decide on a language policy for their schools. The MEC and Ministers contend the state will not be able to fulfil its constitutional duty to provide education to all pupils if some governing bodies are allowed to retain Afrikaans as instruction medium at schools.
“If schools ‘frustrate’ the state’s attempts to fulfil this duty, the state has no other choice but to intervene,” argue the Ministers.
The school and governing body will file heads of arguments at the beginning of July.

the Mec is correct, we cannot allow Afrikaans schools to discriminate against other learners on the basis of the language, the state must intervene to amend the South African Schools Act (SASA).
Michelle Obama never looked better.
nomusa are you a troll? What about the Cape Coloureds in the Western Cape who speak Afrikaans as a first language? Do we now force them to speak English too? All 5 million of them – don’t be silly!
Just to clarify…if a pupil is English an Afrikaans school should become English to accommodate the pupil?…but what if the pupil is Afrikaans shouldn't the English school in-turn become Afrikaans to accommodate the Afrikaans pupil?Whats wrong with some of the black people in this country?Everything is white & black with you?Hoërskool Ermelo is a proper FUNCTIONING high school!!The time and money spend on this useless argument could have been spends to upgrade rural schools(what every language). This is clearly a case of Eggo's that have been damaged! What was the point of the Soweto riots if we deny a people ( Afrikaners, bruinmense & Swart-Afrikaners) to receive schooling in their mother language??People in this country should start thinking for them self's and not what the ANC tells them!!
