SA To Ditch “Willing Buyer, Willing Seller” Program

Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti told MPs on Wednesday that South Africa’s “Willing Buyer, Willing Seller” program for land reform is about to be ditched for a “less costly” model.

“The department will have to investigate less costly, alternative methods of land acquisition by engaging with all stakeholders in the sector,” Nkwinti said.

According to Nkwinti, only 4% of agricultural land had been redistributed to Black Africans, against a target of 30%.

“To redress [the] imbalances of the past, the government must have enabling laws that can allow the pace and the price of land acquisition to be in the hands of the state, rather than in the hands of the seller,” he said, to heckling from opposition benches.

ANC MP Stone Sizani said the department would talk to farmers, landlords and corporations that held land, “to try and find common ground”.

Nkwinti promised that government will negotiate with “well-meaning” commercial farmers, including collectives such as AgriSA.

He also blamed the downturn in agricultural production in South Africa on land owned by Europeans being used for non-agricultural uses. “It is no longer producing food. It’s rearing animals. That’s what is happening. Golf courses? Who owns these? Overseas people. These are not South Africans,” Nkwinti said.

What the hell is going on here ? Are these farmers being forced to sell there property to the government ? And what is this “imbalance?” I think that this idiot just wants to take land away from white farmers and give it to black farmers. Correct me if I am wrong please

And what is the 4% doing on their farms they took? Nothing. As in Zimbabwe, nothing is left of those farms. They only have enough cattle to provide for themselves. The houses are ruined, they have no appliances and if they do, they are stripped for spares and sold.
