Hillary Clinton's right elbow
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton fractured her right elbow Wednesday afternoon while on her way to the White House.
According to State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley, Clinton fell while walking to her official car in the State Department’s basement garage at 5pm EDT. She was with Richard Holbrooke, the administration’s coordinator of policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, at the time. The two were on their way to a scheduled meeting at the White House when the accident occurred.
Clinton was treated and released at The George Washington University Hospital and went home.
The press was first alerted to Clinton’s accident when her Counselor and Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills issued a press statement about it shortly before midnight Wednesday.
Clinton will undergo surgery next week to repair her damaged elbow.
“Secretary Clinton appreciates the professionalism and kindness she received from the medical team who treated her this evening and looks forward to resuming her full schedule soon,” Mills said in the statement.
It unsure how this mishap will affect Clinton’s schedule, although a scheduled event marking World Refugee Day with actress Angelina Jolie has been taken off her agenda.
This marks the second Obama administration member to be sidelined by a serious injury. SCOTUS nominee Sonia Sotomayor suffered a fractured ankle on June 8 in an airport while between appointments with key Senators to secure her nomination.
