Rusty DePass
Prominent South Carolina Republican Rusty DePass has apologized for comparing Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, to a gorilla.
DePass made the comment in a Facebook posting while discussing a recent story about a gorilla that escaped from a local zoo. “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless,” DePass wrote.
The comment was picked up by liberal blogger Will Folks on his FITNEWS blog, who whined about it on Twitter and every other place he could find online.
“I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone,” DePass says. “The comment was clearly in jest.”
DePass added that, “The comment was hers, not mine,” claiming Michelle Obama made a recent remark about humans descending from apes.

What goes for funny nowadays is just poor taste. How do you compare anyone to a gorilla and think it’s funny, especially the First Lady? I’m no Gisele Bundchen, but if we made it 4 years without talking about looks where Barbara Bush was concerned, it’s not a time to start.

This is Gen. Casey, the highest-ranking guy in Iraq, referring to the Iraqi people as ‘fucking hajjis.’” (A spokesperson for Casey, now the Army Chief of Staff, said the general “did not make this statement.”)

As for the attacks on Sarah Palin, and her daughter that you just described (which I have not heard before you pointed them out), I would definitely agree that they are un-called for and unacceptable. That being said, the comments about Michelle Obama were made by an elected official, not a comedian or a “political commentator” (READ- Bill O’Reilly). Can you provide CURRENT similar examples of politicians making the racial comments you described without backlash?
