Ronald Halling tries to teach new recruits
Despite 8-hour-a-week training sessions for the last two months, the Guardian Angels are still not ready to patrol streets of Rochester, Minnesota, according to franchise director Ronald Halling.
A recent publicity event showcasing the franchise’s expertise at breaking up street crime fell apart as the Angels were left flat-footed in their mock altercation. “Stop! Stop! What are you waiting for?” barked the red-bereted Halling at the tream, bringing the training exercise to a halt. “Bust that (fight) up.”
The 17 volunteers, ranging in age from 17 to 55 and includes a college student and a grandmother, have been receiving training in CPR and self defense and going over hypothetical scenarios ranging from domestic abuse situations to street brawls.

Even though Halling says the franchise will begin operating sometime in late July, director of development Mike Lesmeister is not as confident on the date. “We just got done crawling, and now we’re learning to walk,” Lesmeister said. “We got to learn to walk a little stronger.”
Mike LaPlante, leader of the Rochester franchise, said the group wants to introduce the patrols in “cool,” less crime-ridden areas before focusing on the “hotter areas around town.” Such hot spots include the east side of Silver Lake Park, the Homestead Village area, Slatterly Park and East Park.
“We’ll be there to help the police in any way that we can. We’re not there to show up the Rochester police,” LaPlante said.
“We want to be a proactive control towards gangs, violence, drugs and crime,” said patrol leader Dayton “Wolf” Buege, a serious, bespectacled man who plans to attend Rochester Community and Technical College in the fall.
