Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille is thinking about suing her political opponents over their branding her as a “racist.”
Zille brought up the prospect in a speech at the University of Cape Town Wednesday to prove that she is not in a “public forum.”
“If a lie is repeated enough, people start believing it. Black people are starting to think that the DA is full of racists while we are only doing factual analysis,” Zille said, adding it would not be a personal decision to take the legal route, but rather a decision to protect the “core of [South African] democracy.”
Zille has been branded a “racist” many times by her political foes in the ANC and ANCYL. ANYCL general secretary Vuyiswa Tulelo played the race card against Zille during last April’s general election, to little effect.
Contrary to the political demonoization, Zille was a vocal anti-Apartheid activist who used her career as a journalist to uncover the Steven Biko murder during the 1970′s and 80′s. A liberal Jew, Zille has proclaimed the agenda of the Democratic Alliance to be distinctly anti-racist and favors equality for all.
