Iran launches missile
Iran announced Wednesday the successful launch of a missile capable of striking Israel, Turkey, and parts of south-east Europe.
State television in Iran showed the launch of the Sejil-2, a missile with a range of 1,250 miles. Officials say it is derived from the North Korean No-dong missile and is capable of carrying a 1-ton conventional warhead.
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates confirmed the successful launch, adding, “because of some of the problems they’ve had with their engines we think at least at this stage of the testing we think it’s probably closer to the lower end of that range. Whether it hit the target that it was intended for, I have not seen any information on that.”
Range of Iranian Missile
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would “spark an arms race” in the Middle East.
Charles Vick, a senior technical analyst for GlobalSecurity.org, said he was “not impressed” after analyzing the videotape and pictures released by Iran. “It’s just another test that confirms they’ve got the system that was operational last summer,” Vick concluded.
This assessment may not come as comfort to some in Israel, including the leaders of its government. In a meeting with Barack Obama in Washington, DC on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Iran a “threat” to Israeli security. Obama agreed, adding that “a clear timetable” has been established for the end of Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Obama also said that “we’re not going to have talks forever” with Iran to end its program.
Danny Ayalon, Israel’s deputy Foreign Minister, warned Iran is “playing with fire” by testing long-range missiles and continuing a nuclear program.
