Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov blasted gay parades as “Satanic” and homosexuals as “weapons of mass destruction” after Russian military police arrested dozens of protesters who took part in a gay rights march Saturday.
The gay rights march took place before the annual Eurovision Song Contest, held in Russia for the first time this year. Russia’s entrant in the contest, Anastasia Prikhodko, originally threatened to not sing in the competition if the gay rights parade were suppressed, but wavered while expressing tentative support for gay rights in

“I think love has no color,” Prikhodko wrote, adding that she did not “really understand the point of a special parade.” Prikhodko sang with a video of herself crying in the background during her performance as a protest and wound up in a disappointing 11th place.
Fiddle-playing Norwegian Alexander Rybak, who won the competition, was critical of the gay protest. “I think it is a little bit sad that they chose to have [the protests] today [....] They were spending all their energy on that parade, while the biggest gay parade in the world was tonight” at Eurovision, the Minsk-born Rybak said.
Eurovision officials had taken great steps to distance themselves from the gay rights activists.
Riot police swarmed Moscow’s Pushkin Square anticipating protesters would violate a city-wide ban on gay parades. About 30 individuals were arrested, including Australian Peter Tatchell, who organized the demonstration. “There is no freedom for gays in Russia,” Tatchell shouted as police frog-marched him away. “We call on President (Dmitry) Medvedev to meet with us.”
Also arrested were American Andy Thayer of Chicago, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network, and Russian gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev, who was arrested for walking with a man dressed in women’s clothes he described as a friend. Police said they were arresting Alexeyev for walking with a transvestite.
Fatigue-clad police pushed reporters away from the scene but there were no beatings of the protesters.
Moscow authorities splashed out 24 million euros ($32.5 million) on the show and a weeklong series of decadent parties.
