Homosexuality An “Unnatural Act”: Miss Botswana

Miss Botswana, Sumaiyah Marope

Miss Botswana, Sumaiyah Marope

Newly-crowned Miss Botswana, Sumaiyah Marope, has caused an uproar after declaring same-sex relationships to be an “unnatural act.”

In a scenario that mirrors the recent controversy at the Miss USA competition, Marope was asked by judge DJ Fresh if she would advocate gay marriage.

“It is unnatural act,” Marope proclaimed. “God made us men and women [... ] It is only proper for men to have relationships with women as God created us.”

The crowd erupted in a loud roar of approval of her comments.

Unlike Miss California, Marope went on to win the competition, and was awarded a US $700 bracelet from rapper Russell Simmons, a brand new Mercedes Benz, and an academic scholarship.

Miss Botswana’s comments come at an unusual time in Botswana, as several gay rights groups are pushing for the removal of legislation that does not recognize same-sex relationships.

off topic… But I would love to hear Frank talk about the documentary "Alive in Jo Burg" and the recent 2 cent hollywood crap movie District 9 that was based on "Alive in Joburg".

It would be interesting to hear what Frank has to say especially in light of Franks remarks about Stanton Freedman (the UFO freek job) that was on the Right Perspective as a freek job guest.

  2. Miss Crack-wanna says

And she look like Halle Berry after New Jack City, been smoking crack a bit too much. Fuck this stupid Islamified hypocrite. Marriage in Botswana is between a woman and the village next to her. Africans and their ideas of marriage include too many people and lots of AIDS cases. Maybe they should mind their own business and stick to saving their wonderfully-heterosexual men who go around RAPING any woman they see.

  3. Raymond says

Who would have imagined that sanity’s voice would come from Botswana? Thank God for exalting the lowly to put to shame the mighty.

  4. Darts says

    Fuck gay marriage!

  5. Guru says

I think she is entitled to her opinion given that this is a free country, i wonder if it would be a smart answer to give at the Miss World competition. the smart thing would be to understand the dominant views of the host country, i suspect she has done exactly that here

  6. Ann says

Fuck Hetero Marriage, actually FUCK ALL MARRIAGE, lol. No one takes it seriously, and especially these backward African people. How much you wanna make a bet that homegirl wears bi-focals. Crosseyed is the new thing in African beauty pageants. What a ugly chick. Miss California got no ass, NONE and this one looks like a cartoon duck caught in the rain.

  7. beast says

lets see your picture Ann..i bet you look like a Warthog. What you are looking at there is a good looking woman. Now opinions are like bums, everyone has got one, she was asked a question and she is answering reflecting hers, thats all.

  8. KansasGirl says

Good for this young lady. I only wish Miss. California would of received the same treatment.

  9. Jim says

Return marriage to the dominion of the church, de-politicize it and the controversy goes away.

Allow the church to marry whom ever the church chooses to marry.

  10. Goody says

Ann, don’t be so jealous. You are beautiful on the INSIDE.

  11. smeg says

You fags have been staring so long into the shit-stained assholes of your “bitches” that you have lost the ability to see beauty and truth when it’s show to you. Why are “gays” so hateful and angry? Because the fucking know what they are doing is WRONG and the hate themselves for it.

  12. klt says

When homos and fomos marry they know that what they are doing is nothing but an evil slap in the face to God. They are encouraged by satan to continue this sin much like he encouraged eve to eat the apple. Homosexuality is a sin. They know it. Even the ones that don't believe in God know it. The real sad thing is that one day they will meet their maker and will pay for their sins.

  13. sir lance alot says

omg lol and you guys call your self christian..i feel pitty for your soals..god will have judgement on you! please re-read the bible. the biggest sin is to hate and judge others..i'll pray for you guys tonight

  14. jk says

As a Christian, I must never judge a person, but must always discern and judge conduct – call good good and evil evil. This woman has done just that. The homosexual act is disordered and intrinsically evil. That is for us to proclaim, because Christ has made that clear. However, the disposition of the soul of the person committing the act is for God alone to decide. I would submit that we must love all people without condoning evil conduct. It is not love to tell someone who is committing a sinful act that the act is not sinful. That is, at best indifference, but it is surely not love.

  15. Anna says

Lots of racism in these comments.

  16. Jen says

Stephen and jk, beautifully said! It is amazing that those who are demanding tolerance and acceptance are the last to offer it others who don't jump on board with their agenda regardless of how offensive it may be. As for this beautiful African woman Miss Botswana, I applaud her courage and I hope she has great success in all her endeavors. As for those who misinterpret the Bible, you too are children of God and as children of God I do not hate any of you, nor do teach or encourage hate. God teaches us to love, Jesus teaches us to forgive and pray for our neighbor. But seeing and recognizing a grave moral wrong is also our responsibility. Turning away from and discouraging others from committing those wrongs is another thing we do. Accepting and tolerating, embracing or welcoming into our homes, lives and schools is allowing those grave moral wrongs to a stronghold and proliferate our lives. I believe the silent majority has been silent long enough.

  17. Stephen says

I was referring to those who are an embarrassment to the cause of protecting the traditional definition of marriage. We should not lower ourselves to the level of the lavender mafia.

  18. Tanya says

She has courage and strength that comes from God. A bright light in the world which is full of darkness.

Wonder why people who blog need to use such vile language, what are they so angry about?

  19. Stephen says

I am so impressed by all the intelligent refined language that I am seeing here. Many folks will be so impressed by such erudite expressions that they will be won over to the causes that these posters are advocating.

  20. calm down says

Reading blogs can be a real eye opener. This one concerning the beautiful young lady that won the Miss Botswana title is a relief after the disgusting, hateful and vicious attack that was perpetrated against Miss California and still continues today by a fringe hate group. Seems as if the Botswanans are far more advanced than our own country.

  21. freddy says

Whoever said Botswana is more “advanced” than our country because of what the beauty pageant contestant said is absolutely the most laughable dolt of the day. Thanks for the chuckles, you close-minded d-bag. Please write down your thoughts on marriage equality for posterity; I’d love to hear about how your grandkids cringe at your vitriol.

  22. L.S. says

    To Miss Crack-wanna,
YOu are just a foolish and silly individual to whom nobody will listen. Miss Botswana is right about the gay thing;l it is unnatural and against nature regardless of how much gays want it to be not so. My pity is for the gay community because nothing they can do can change God’s laws. This woman has strength and honor to speak forthrightly. I am so proud of her. It is time to speak out against thte horrors and crimes and sins of the world today, including acts of homosexuals. Even the word itself is an abomination.

  23. Dusty says

She sounds just like a white American talking about interracial marriage 50 years ago. It’s refreshing to see that black people have come so far that they can forget what it feels like to have people hate you for who you love. I guess history actually does repeat itself!

  24. maiam says

Good for Ms Botswana and Ms California and all the millions around the world who see homosexuality as being unnatural and immoral. That is exactly what it is whether homosexuals or their supporters wish to acknowledge it or not. If this was a normal act, then there would be no protests about it at all. People have a free will to do whatever they want, they have no right however to force, by any human law, society to believe in this or be part of this deviant culture. They hope that opposition can be handled by throwning into jail for a ‘hate crime’ anyone saying that this is an abnormal and unnatural lifestye, and are also are working towards the forcing of innocent children in schools to accept this as normal and their parents or others to face jail terms for not agreeing to expose their children to this sick act through legislation. As one homosexual activist recently said in a speech – “‘Your children will belong to us, they are our future” which is a creepy thing to hear from anyone in a position of power. Freedom of speech and thought is being taken away in America and people should wake up to what is happening and what will happen in the future.

  25. Lucy says

The human rectum is anatomically designed to push matter OUTWARD, not to receive. The human vagina is one of the few human organs designed to push a baby OUTWARD, and receive a penis INWARD. I have nothing against gay people, but God designed man and woman to have sex the proper and natural way.

  26. Chaz says

Miss Buttswanna pop out for the right village. Beautiful on the inside? I suppose so if you call hatred a positive thing. She should learn to WRAP IT UP, like all those Muslims do. Glad the U.S. is not a backward, falling-apart kinda nation like Botswana. I mean, really. So rape is "natural"? Someone please cover her up, Allah was talking about the virgins in the afterlife, not this one. So Muslim is she that she is UNCOVERED and parading around to be judged by supposedly-holy muslims. Such a joke. Not to worry. The state of their nation is due to all of the Botswanans showing their "beauty inside". Yeah, uh-huh. lol @ the wet duck comment. They plucked her off the savannah.

  27. NewsGuy says

    Botswana is a predominately-Christian nation.

About 60% of the nation is Christian, and only 1% of the nation is Muslim.

  28. Vin says

It is so refreshing to know that beauty is certainly not skin deep with these girls. They give those of us who have come close to despair at the downfall of our society hope that all is not lost . I hope they become well known as role models for their generation. They are sorely needed.

  29. Sharbel Ferro says

    maiam you are exactly correct.
People need to wake up to what is happening. When a society, through its laws, rejects God. they also reject His protection; and expose themselves to Satan’s destructive force. To a certain mystic Jesus Christ said: “The demons that tempt men to lust after their own kind are among the ugliest of all demons.” Societies everywhere must rally to the defense of life, truth and the good moral law, and through prayer, the sacraments and true Christian charity, win back our brothers and sisters from Satan’s grip.

  30. Suzee says

Wow. Beautiful *and* has common sense. Great combo!

  31. Adrian Kimberly says

So what many of you are saying is that unless a heterosexual couple “have sex the normal way” then their marriage is an abomination; equating that with homosexual unions wherein sex is, as you describe it, unnatural? Anybody else here see a problem with that line of reasoning? What I truly don’t understand is how “gay marriage” can threaten anybody any more than any marriage. If you don’t like gay marriages, don’t have one. It’s much like abortion, I suppose. If you don’t like it: DON’T DO IT.

  32. Mark says

I find it extraordinarily comical that people think their all powerful god is insulted by a few people getting married.

If that all powerful god is so all powerful, well, IT can stop gays from marrying.

I find it equally funny that this all powerful god seems to have no interest in this issue. After all, this all powerful god has not stopped a single gay marriage. I see ONLY PEOPLE DOING SO.

  33. Ruhlmann says

Your puny god will be a small corner in a museum display of humankind's savage and destructive superstitions. When the last church, synagogue and mosque has been razed or turned into a flea market homo sapien will truly be enobled.

  34. Rose says

Mark – God won’t stop gay marriage. Humans have free will – that’s what makes you different from an animal (although you don’t make a very good case for that.) God does, however judge those who indulge in gay sex and make a mockery of marriage. We are not the judges, but be very certain of this, there will be judgement, and no one will escape that.

Adrian – homosexual sex IS an abomination. The tendency toward homosexuality is not the sin, the actions that go with it are. But, society tries to teach us that it’s ok. Ask God what He thinks. And if you don’t believe there is a God who will judge you some day, then enjoy your life now, because this is your heaven

  35. Shona says

Who cares if 60% are Christian. Their backwardness is due to what? gays?? not really, think more like nasty ass African men raping chicks like it ain’t nothing. They need to worry about who’s SPREADING HIV IN THEIR COUNTRY. AFRICAN MEN WHO SCREW WOMEN.

  36. Trimelda says

Hey, Ruhlmann, are you always this unpleasant or did this article just bring out the butt in you? Lay off the sister and grow up concerning the Faith. There are 1 Billion Catholics and growing-especially overseas. If you count the other Christians you have another billion. And then there are almost as many Muslims. There is very few atheists. The truth is those who don’t believe in God will soon be curiosity pieces in a museum somewhere and the rest of the world will laugh at you. “Only a FOOL says ‘There is no God.’ “

  37. Stephanie Kansas says

This to me is a non-issue. If you don’t agree with marriage equality, don’t marry someone of the same sex! As a school teacher, I don’t ever recall reading/citing the words…”with liberty and justice for ALL” and seeing the word, “except.” Separate but equal does not, has not and should not work! We can not “eenie meenie miney moe” through our neighborhoods and point to who is allowed marriage or not. Many read the Bible more literally, others more metaphorically (or more emphasis on legalism rather than love), however each should be respected. We also need to take cultural, as well as historical, perspectives into consideration when reading the Bible. Yes our country was founded on Christianity, however many would argue it was also found on slavery and without woman’s rights. We are a Nation continually moving in the direction of Justice! Lastly, if we want “traditional” marriage we must be careful in using the Bible as a reference. In Biblical days men had multiple wives and usually treated them as property and baby bearers only. Lot had sex with his daughters. We cannot use the Bible (or certain parts of it that are convenient) to set our moral compass with regards to sexuality or just certain relationships. As a Christian and American, I am for equality, love, and acceptance for all human life. God bless you, see you in heaven. – Stephanie

  38. Ruhlmann says

Hey Trimelda Catholicism is growing like a disease one might say then again so is smoking. Increasing numbers of anything proves nothing. I have no problem with people having any kind of faith, but I do when those people wish to make the tenets of their faith official social policy. Christianity has drowned witches, burned at the stake and impeded scientific study long enough. Pray in your churches, mosques and synagogues but I don’t want to see or hear it in our schools and governments. I refuse to be held accountable to the expectations of your superstitions. Religion demeans our species and I find prostrating oneself to gods undignified and embarrassing. If this consigns me to foolery then I go willingly and certain of my opinions. Why does this threaten you? I would assume a godless heathen’s opinions would be beneath your eloquent response.

  39. blackass says

Miss Crack Wanna can kiss her ass, do you guys think we are stupid in Africa? Well think again you sons of bitches, I thought racism was the thing of the past, come to Africa and you’ll see how black and white people in the motherland live, they are united. Unlike you stupid Americans who only think war is the answer to all solutions, I bet Barrack Obama will bring some sense in those hard headed whites who still think blacks are stupid, fuck u all racists.

Maybe we can get sir lance a lot a private education so he can learn (finally) to spell. Speaking of hypocrite, nice to see the real side of the sodomites with their hate, intolerance, and bigotry, well, you know, the deflection they always have for everyone else who dares disagree with these bigots, see how racist the comments are above because she is from Botswana. How come these hypocrite libs didn’t have these racist remarks for Barrie Hussein, our commie prez when he was running???

  42. Ruhlmann says

Racism without a doubt is a curse and indefensible. For the record Barrack Obama is bi-racial. Would Rhodesia be included in your multi racial paradise? Is Rwanda a good example of racial and cultural harmony? Darfur sounds like a great vacation site. Congo for real estate investments anyone? Yes siree I am gonna go to Africa and live like an African. By the way “hard headed whites” is a racial slur. I believe
racism is a problem for all the races. In this we are truly equal.

  43. Alek S says

To the people here who have claimed that Christ condemned homosexuality. If you can read, please re-read (or read for the first time!) your Bibles. Christ had nothing to say on that specific topic. He did, however, have LOT AND LOTS to say about loving one another, not judging one another, and showing compassion. Were you not in Sunday school for those lessons?

  44. will winchester says

She [Miss Bot], above all people, should know better and what it is like to be discriminated against. God didn’t let people of her race date outside of her race notsolongago in the United States.

  45. Feisty says

For those who sit in judgement, please do us all a favor and simply call down the lightning on the sinners. Go ahead, I’ll wait . . .

It shouldn’t be difficult . . . I’m sure somewhere in the King James version of the Holy Bible, you can find some spell or incantation that will allow you to smite the heretics and non-believers.

If you can’t make that happen, then maybe you could raise the dead please? Perhaps the millions who have died as the result of HIV/AIDS? Or maybe you could part the Red Sea? A burning bush perhaps? No?

Then how about consider this: as your heart beats this moment, and your lives tick past, realize that you are one tiny microbe among 6,700,000,000,000 other microbes currently squirming about on this tiny ball of rock hurdling through space.

Why is it so easy to accuse LGBT people of being unnatural, wrong, evil? Hmmm? Are we insecure because we know we’ll all die and rot in the Earth and no one will remember us or care in 20 years? Are we desparately trying to elevate our self-esteems by attacking or diminishing others?

Do we believe based on undeniable truth or because it’s what we were taught and it gives us an emotional buzz to feel safe and secure . . . and superior?

If Satan truly exists, he’s really not that effective . . . after all these centuries, he missed his End Times deadline and left everyone at the 700 Club feeling kinda sheepish . . . after all that doom and gloom fundraising.

Come on folks. Wake up. We need to love one another, and this planet. When generations look back and see how many dollars and hours were wasted on accusations and witch hunts and self-righteous behaviors, the proof about our beliefs will be right where it always is – in the pudding.

  46. Xavier says

Hi, I’m 16, and i’m spanish, I think the actitude oh this woman is so impolite and so rude! From my point of view, gays, lesbians and transexuals are people like us! And they can marriage like us! It’s a very and usual think to see two boys holding their hands or two girls.. It’s not a problem, the problem people (stupid people) who don’t accept this.

Sorry if my english it’s not so good.

  47. Ruhlmann says

We understand you Xavier and appreciate your sentiments. Gay men and Lesbian women have almost all the same rights as the rest of society now in Canada. This wasn't always true of course and our government and society officially and judicialy discriminated as unchallenged policy. One day The Right Honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau who was Prime Minister stood in parliament and stated that "The government has no business in the bedrooms of the nation". That was a powerfull and scandalous statement to make in 1970, it flew in the face of generations of people raised to believe otherwise. It happened almost overnight here and it started with a statement from an educated and respected man who had no personal stake in the issue. Words are more powerfull than the average person is aware of I believe. Her statement is innocuous enough on the surface but what she may not realise is our history of abuse and condemnation might make us more sensitive than would seem rational. It can be justified by certain types as a licence to hate and mistreat as well. I am sure that she is just an average girl parroting what she has been indoctrinated into from a young age. I am sure that she is a good freind, neighbour and daughter. I am sure that her statement was stated as her conviction and not with malice. I was convinced that her tender years and naivete might be a legitimate rational for her statement and yet you are younger still and speak with the compassionate wisdom of someone more seasoned in life. Kudos to you Xavier.

we i botswana are proud..we never experienced racism and we are mor tha happy to upport our own. So thos who are upset, we feel sorry for yu, tose who are happy we feel sorry for you too. Its hate that has brought both unhappiness and happiness in this forum, but in botswana, we are peace loving nation. The intension was to speak the truth based on our culture. But we are not goin to apologize to anyone nor afirm anyone. Just enjoy life people you only live once

  49. Peace4all says

We cant expect much from her, she has not been schooled enough to understand issues of diversity in our society. But again, you must be very dull not to appreciate the pluralistic nature of our society! She is a reject of the university of botswana and now rescued by Linkokwing, so what do you expect?

  50. Miss Crack-wanna says

How funny that you think I am white. Dummy, I am BLACK. The issue is that this lady is living on some bullsh*t. Africans and their macho ways of WAR and RAPE (since you claim it is the Americans, it’s EVERYONE) should be the focus. I am glad she believes that “marriage” whatever that means is between a cat and a dog. She should go and save her African sisters in the plight of the rapes that are going on all over the place. No one cares for Christianity, it’s on its way out with Islam and Judaism. Wake up folks, it’s a new century.
