James Oberstar
Democrat congressman James Oberstar wants to impose a mileage tax on cars and trucks running on American highways now instead of waiting years to see if pilot programs work – and says we have the technology to do it.
“Why do we need a pilot program? Why don’t we just phase it in?” said the Minnesota Democrat, who is also chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Oberstar is drafting a six-year transportation bill that will use mileage taxes to raise a half a trillion dollars for highway and transit programs.
“I’m at a point of impatience with more studies,” Oberstar said at a House hearing on the issue. Oberstar’s program calls for the mandatory 
installation of GPS technology into vehichles to see many miles a car has been driven and if it was on an interstate highway or a secondary road. The devices would also calculate the amount of tax owed.
Gas tax revenues have fallen in the last two years, prompting the need for another income stream for government programs. While Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has ruled out raising gas taxes and the White House has rejected a mileage-based tax, neither has offered an alternative.

Gas revenues have fallen because of the prudence of many Americans who have changed their driving habits due to several factors, something that a moron like Overstay ( should be is name) does not see because his is blinded by his Marxist ideology.

Not only is the taxation a problem, this Democrat wants to put GPS devices in every car and truck in America – so that the government will be able to determine if we’re driving on highways or secondary roads and be able to calculate the tax.
This also means the Government will be able to monitor exactly where you go at anytime, in real time.
That guy who wrote 1984 must be cussin’ up a storm in his grave.
The heavy taxation on people who use their cars (which, btw, will hit the poor harder than the rich) will force more people into mass transit, and as the need for more mass transit grows, the need for more government programs to fill that need. And then, MORE TAXES.
Seems we’re being driven into the cattle cars to be killed by taxes.
But it won’t necessarily be more taxes at that point, the government will raise fees on using the mass transit.
And so it goes.
At some point, taxes become tyranny, and this is where it crosses the line. This bozo can hardly wait to get his greedy little mitts on a new form of screwing people out of THEIR money. Thank you for bring this to our attention!

They’re planning this crap in the UK too, saying that in a few years cars will have GPS devices installed by default when manufactured.
In the UK, they said these tracking devices will be used to automatically collect tolls when motorists use such roads, but also to fine motorists exceeding speed limits, since they can use GPS signals to calculate average speeds between certain points.
Keep in mind that GPS signals are “free for public” channels on satellites (you don’t pay for GPS / SatNav devices receiving such signals) used for other purposes too!!
The main reason European Space Agency is spending billions on Galileo constellation of satellites, is that US govt solely controls the GPS signals on current constellation, i.e. accuracy and status – so they can switch it off should they want to, amongst other functions.
Would it surprise you that those satellites are used for military purposes and everything that encompasses?
Just park your vehicle and don’t go to work. No tax on transportation and no income taxes to pay. No social security taxes to pay. No medicare taxes to pay. See how long the government survives then.
