Reports have surfaced that Iraqi police are torturing gay Iraqis to death using a cruel and decidedly unusual method – gluing their anuses shut and inducing diarrhea.
Once Iraqi police arrest a gay man, they apply a substance known as “Iranian gum,” a super-glue that bonds skin instantly and requires surgery to remove. The gay man is then forced to drink a liquid that induces diarrhea, causing a slow and painful death.
Cellphone videos of the torture deaths are reportedly circulating throughout Iraq to intimidate gays from engaging in sodomy.
A new Shiite Muslim decree in Iraq targeting homosexuals is reportedly the reason for the attacks. Sunni leaders have also been broadcasting from satellite television shows, calling for the murder of gay men.
The claim comes from a translated report by UAE-based media network Al-Arabiya, and has been publicized byThe International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. The IGLHRC has not been able to substantiate the claims from independent sources.
An Iraqi police official told Al-Arabiya, “We, like everyone else, have heard rumors about these cases, but we can’t comment on something that is not evidence, and there is no evidence for these crimes either in terms of motivation or in terms of the nature of the criminal acts. We do not know the motives of the killers and we do not know the intentions of those killed.”
Additionally, The L.A. Times reports that posters have surfaced in Sadr City threatening the lives of homosexuals. “‘If you don’t cease your perverted acts, you will get your fair punishment,’ read the signs, which also include the names of local residents believed to be gay.
The BBC has shown video of a allegedly gay man being stripped and humilated by Iraqi police. Gay activists in Iraq claim at least 60 homosexuals have been killed in the country so far this year.
