At a joint press conference with Israeli foreign minister Avigor Lieberman, Barack Obama’s Mid East envoy George Mitchell proclaimed the US president wants to see the creation of a Palestinian state.
“I reiterated to the foreign minister that US policy favors, with respect to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a two-state solution which will have a Palestinian state living in peace alongside the Jewish state of Israel,” Mitchell said, with Lieberman at his side.
Lieberman was cool in his comments to reporters and made no mention of a Palestinian state. “It was a great opportunity to exchange some ideas, and we spoke about really close cooperation,” Lieberman said. Lieberman already rejected reviving statehood negotiations with Palestinians back in 2007 when then-US President George W. Bush proposed the idea.
