I came across the following article by Nomangesi Mbiza on IOL and was curious whether this was the democracy Mr Dave Stewart, Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation, was referring to in last Friday’s “Hello Africa” interview. Furthermore I can report that I have received yet more confirmations from South Africa that the ANC is handing out food vouchers in exchange for votes. Clearly there is a vast difference between my perception of democracy and that of Mr Stewart.
A Congress of the People member was allegedly beaten by an African National Congress member in Gugulethu on Monday after refusing to take an ANC pamphlet.
COPE’s provincial party chairperson, Mbulelo Ncedana, told the Cape Argus on Monday night that the party had just finished hosting a jazz festival at the Gugulethu sports complex when a member, Mthobeli Sasa, who had been on his way home from the festival, “came running” in, bleeding.
Ncedana said ANC members had earlier started “toyi-toying”, but “we were about to leave the sports complex because the festival was already finished the toyi-toyi passed without a problem.”
But then Sasa arrived and alleged that he and others had been walking from the festival when ANC members told them not to walk on the same road as them and offered them ANC pamphlets.
“They kept forcing us to take the pamphlets, but we refused because we are COPE members and they also knew that because we were wearing COPE’s T-shirts,” said Sasa.
He said that a car with ANC stickers stopped behind them and a man, whom he alleged was a ward councillor, ordered the members to “beat the dog”.
“There were more than 10 of them they were kicking and pushing me around. I don’t know them,” he said, adding that the only familiar face was that of the councillor.
Sasa was taken to a doctor in Athlone and later laid assault charges at Gugulethu police station.
