Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir unveils her economic recovery plan.
Iceland PM and Social Democrat Alliance Party leader Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir has ruled out general elections on whether the country should join the European Union, because EU membership is the foundation of her political party’s economic and employment policy.
The announcement came as Sigurdardóttir unveiled an ecomonic recovery plan which gives generous welfare payouts to homes facing forclosure and reducing unemployment figures that hinges on joining the EU and replacing the Icelandic Króna with the Euro. Sigurdardóttir calls EU membership a “solid base for stability.”
“I think that [a general election on EU membership] will only hold up the matter and not give a realistic image to the public for them to decide until they know the advantages and the faults of the membership, what it is that we will have when we join,” she said.
Sigurdardóttir said the current Red-Green Socialist coalition government may be able to come to an agreement on the issue of EU membership if they are able to continue in their position of a ruling coalition.
“Both [the SDA and the Left-Green Movement] have said that this matter should be settled in a national election and I have faith in that we are able to find a solution that is acceptable to both parties, as we have been able to find a solution to all matters in these 60 days that we have been working together,” Sigurdardóttir concluded.
