A former immigration adjudicator with the Department of Homeland Security was convicted by a federal grand jury Monday for conspiring to encourage immigrants to enter the country illegally and accepting a bribe to do it.
54-year-old Hasmukh Patel of McDonough, Georgia used his position in the Department of Homeland Security to bring a couple from India into America with fraudulent work visas.
A witness testified that he paid Patel US $100,000 so his brother- and sister-in-law could come into America. Additional witnesses from the US Consulate in Mumbai, India, testified Patel called the consulate to vouch for the visa application.
It is not known if Patel accepted bribes to bring other foreigners into America illegally.
Patel faces up to 49 years in prison and a $1.175 million fine when he is sentenced June 23 by U.S. District Judge Clarence Cooper.
