The Guardian Angels are hoping they are third time lucky in establishing a franchise in Atlanta, Georgia.
The so-called “crime fighters” are returning at the behest of single parent and karate instructor Brandon Byrd, who recently moved to the city from the suburbs.
“I see the police. They do a great job,” Byrd said. “But I know they’re stretched kinda thin in some places.”
The Angels first tried a franchise in Atlanta back in 1986, but that quickly folded. Degenerate Dirtbag and Guardian Angels leader Curtis Sliwa blamed the failure on the local leader’s joining the US Navy.
The Angels returned in 2003 but were treated coldly by Atlanta police Chief Richard Pennington. “I must have been frostbitten from the tip of my head to my toes,” Sliwa recalled. Then, business owners who initially invited the Angels to Atlanta turned their backs on the group. “The people who invited me wouldn’t let me in,” he said. “I was left in the dark.”
Sliwa boasts of having franchises in 140 cities across the world. However, many of these franchises, such as Halifax, Nova Scotia and Calgary, Alberta, are thread-bare operations. Guardian Angels franchises are notorious for opening with great fan fare and very quietly closing a few years later.
