Television superstar Oprah Winfrey’s school for girls in South Africa has become embroiled in another sex scandal, approximately a year-and-a-half after a female teacher at the school was arrested for sexually abusing her students.
The Afrikaans-language newspaper Rapport broke the news Sunday of seven girls attending the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy being dismissed for alleged sexual misconduct. “They broke the school’s code of conduct,” spokeswoman Lisa Halliday bluntly put it.
Other reports include the underaged girls were involved in lesbian sexual affairs.
A letter sent to one of the girls, age 15, read in part: “You… have been found guilty of physical contact of a sexual nature with another pupil on campus, harassment, bullying other girls on campus and of being dishonest by not telling investigators the whole truth.”
This marks the second sex scandal at Oprah Winfrey’s much-ballyhooed school. Matron Virginia Tiny Makgobo, age 27, was arrested in late November 2007 for indecent assault, common assault, soliciting a minor to perform an indecent act and verbal abuse of girls at the school. All the girls were minors.
The case involving Makgobo is scheduled to continue in the Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court on June 1st.
