The African National Congress (ANC) is set to continue its one-party rule of South Africa, thanks to its smudging and covering-up of the country’s most vital issues, lying about rival political parties, and abuses of the democratic voting system, reports African Crisis writer Jan Lamprecht.
The ANC has failed to address the crime issue, arguably the largest problem facing South Africa today. After telling White people who did not like the crime problem in the country to leave, Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula promised to release crime statistics every 6 months. Not only did Nqakula not make good on his promise, but his replacement Nathi Mthethwa, who admitted the crime situation “is bad”, has also failed to follow through on this promise.
The ANC is hiding South Africa’s crumbling infrastructure from public scrutiny as well, writes Lamprecht. The collapsing water supply system has already made areas such as Kroonstad in the Free State run dry of drinkable water, despite recent heavy rainfalls there. Cholera from neighboring Zimbabwe, where it has already killed thousands, poses an increasing risk as clean water supplies collapse.
In the political arena, the ANC has set a whispering campaign of deceit and lies against its political rivals. The ANC has reportedly told it mainly-black support base that the decidedly liberal and anti-racist Democratic Alliance “will bring Apartheid back” if elected to power. It has also maligned newly-formed political party COPE in a similar manner.
The ANC is very much like the neighboring Mugabe Regime in Zimbabwe when it comes to manipulating the voters. “Behind the scenes, its operatives on the ground spread the message that the ANC will know when you “voted wrong” and you will be punished for this,” writes Lamprecht. “Tens of millions of black people DO NOT believe that their vote is truly anonymous. They FIRMLY BELIEVE the ANC will KNOW who voted for whom. This is one of the most important and fundamental rights of democracy, and yet the ANC, like Mugabe, flaunts it openly and constantly ON THE GROUND in the townships and the rural areas. Only the more sophisticated, younger or middle class blacks know that this is not supposed to happen.”
General elections in South Africa are to be held this coming summer.
