ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema has proclaimed that the University of the Free State (UFS) will be “transformed” after general elections in South Africa later this year.
“We will start with the (UFS) Council, where Afrikaners are sitting for the last 20 years,” Malema told about two hundred cheering students at the Rag grounds at the UFS on Friday.
Malema said the UFS was still run by white Afrikaners “who use apartheid tactics to run this institution” for the “chosen few”. The center of the controversy lies around UFS policy for campus residences, which allows for a 30 percent black or white group in a hostel, depending on the majority. The ANCYL leader said it could not be allowed that people stay on campus because of a “percentage”, because it legalizes racism. Malema said the new minister of education, after the April 22 election, would be asked to demand the transformation and restructuring of the residence policy at UFS.
“We cannot be threatened by the white minority, we have already beaten them (in 1994),” Malema said.
The university faced controversy in late February 2008 following a video made by four white students of the Reitz residence in protest against racial integration at the university. In riots that followed the video, the civil rights organization Afriforum claimed that white students were warned to leave the campus by protesting black students, who allegedly threatened that all white “bitches” would be raped and all white farmers killed. Few white students were on campus, while some were assaulted, and residents of Reitz and other hostels formed furniture barricades in ‘fear for their lives’.
