Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez announced during a televised cabinet meeting Tuesday that his country and Russia have created a joint venture to work on oil projects.
The Russian-Venezuelan energy company will “open operations not only in Venezuela, but also throughout the world,” Chavez said.
Venezuela’s state-run oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, and a union of Russian oil companies will work together on extracting heavy crude in Venezuela’s largely untapped Orinoco River basin.
Russian Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev opened the possibility Monday of having long-range Russian nuclear bombers stationed in Venezuela.
