Zimbabwe Prison Like Nazi Camps

Free at Last: Roy Bennett

Free at Last: Roy Bennett

Newly-freed  MDC treasurer Roy Bennett has compared his experience in Zimbabwe‘s prison system to being locked up in a Nazi concentration camp.

Bennett, who was imprisoned last month on treason and terrorism charges against the Marxist regime of Robert Mugabe,  was freed after a long negotion process with lawyers and the court. Bennett, a born-and-bred farmer, has been tapped by the MDC for Deputy Agriculture Minister in the Zimbabwe cabinet.

Bennett described his prison ordeal as “harrowing” and some prisoners look worse than detainees at Auschwitz. A report issued by the MDC during Bennett’s imprisonment claimed his cellmate died and Bennett was left in the cell with the dead body for several days. Bennett says at least five people died during the month was in jail.

Now that he is a free man, Bennett could be sworn in as Deputy Agricultural Minister within days. Bennett says he will work within the coalition government “as long as it will help the development of the nation”.
