Brig. Gen. Frederick Rudesheim (L.)
Brig. Gen. Frederick Rudesheim has announced that there “no cessation of combat operations” in Iraq after the June 30 deadline to pull back most American forces from Iraqi cities.
Gen. Rudesheim told reporters the pullback will actually help security in Baghdad because US troops can help stop militants from using bases in rural areas to stage urban attacks.
American military transition teams will also remain in Iraq to continue training local security forces.
The announcement is a stark contrast to the campain promise Barack Obama made during last year’s US Presidential campaign. Obama rode on a platform to remove one brigade a month from Iraq until all US troops were gone from the country if elected president.
