Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai left a Zimbabwean hospital Saturday, heavily bandaged and wearing a neck brace, one day after a truck hit the car he was in, killing his wife.
Tsvangirai will spend a week recuperating in nearby Botswana, where he spent some time as a political exile, and then return to Zimbabwe to attend his wife’s funeral.
Sources in Botswana report that Tsvangirai is being treated at a hospital in Gaborone. “He’s badly bruised and is receiving treatment,” said the source.
The American embassy in Zimbabwe said a truck was coming in the opposite direction of Tsvangirai’s 4×4, then swung across the road to avoid a pothole. The truck’s trailer smashed into Tsvangirai’s 4×4, rolling it over three times. The truck was transporting AIDS medicine from the US government.
Although some say this discounts claims that the accident was really an assassination attempt, the history of Marxist dictator Robert Mugabe engineering road “accidents” does not rule the possibility out completely. Tsvangirai’s political party, The Movement for Democratic Change, is calling for a full investigation of the incident.
