Landscapers working on a Denver, Colorado home have unearthed a cache of tools from the Clovis people dating back 13,000 years.
The cache of 83 tools was buried 18 inches deep and packed into a hole the size of a large shoe box. Archeologists believe the tools were probably wrapped in a skin that deteriorated over time. They are stunned to find such monumental discovery in such a densely-populated metropolitan area like Denver.
University of Colorado-Boulder anthropologist Douglas Bamforth said the tools reveal an “unexpected level of sophistication” and are “unnecessarily complicated,” artistic and utilitarian at the same time.
“The kind of stone that’s present – the kind that flakes to a good sharp edge – isn’t widely available in this part of Colorado. It looks like they were storing material because they knew they would need it later,” said Bamforth.
The Clovis people are part of the Solutrean Hypothesis, which concludes that White Caucasians from an area in Western Europe (”Solutrea”) traveled across an ice sheet in the North Atlantic. Carbon dating has shown Clovis-point tools discovered in North America and Europe existed at the same time.
