After a dismal first year, the Halifax, Nova Scotia franchise of The Guardian Angels has dwindled from eight members down to only four, and the group has not patrolled in months, according to one of the remaining vigilantes.
“I haven’t personally been out in probably four months,” Fred Folz of Kentville told The Chronicle Herald Wednesday. “I don’t know if they’re gone (for good) or just retired for the winter.”
Halifax franchise leader James Smith could not be reached for comment.
Folz, whose real job is a paramedic, said he has driven the 52 miles (82 km.) to Halifax for patrols with the group 12 to 18 times, but many times the patrols were cancelled due to either cold weather or their own dwindling numbers. Guardian Angles must patrol in groups of four.
The franchise’s effect on local crime “would be a real tiny impact,” admits Folz.
The Right Perspective interviewed Halifax Police Chief Beazley in December 2007 when Sliwa was first trying to muscle his way into the city’s Commons area. Chief Beazley then learned of Sliwa’s hyperbolic activities, his history of taking advantage of well-meaning citizens looking to make their city a better place to live.
