The entire crew of a South African airlines flight has been arrested in Heathrow Airport for being in possession of 50kg of marijuana. Authorities also found a 5kg bag of cocaine on the plane.
The drugs were discovered in three suitcases after the plane landed at 08:00 on Jan. 21st. South African marijuana, known as a daga in Britain, is highly prized for its unique qualities and authorities put the street value of the pot stash at R4.5million (US$470,000).
All fifteen crew members from South Africa’s flag carrier and charter airline were questioned and charged by police. The crew was released on bail.
Drug smuggling is pandemic in South Africa, with many international drug cartels using the country’s banking system to launder their money. In a seperate incident on the same day of the SA airlines bust, a Nigerian was busted attempting to smuggle Mandrax tablets and 20 grams of crystal meth into Heathrow from South Africa.
