Iceland’s new Red-Green Socialist government has proposed changes the Icelandic constitution which would allow Iceland to apply for membership to the European Union during the next election cycle.
The Icelandic constitution currently says there must be two parliamentary session with elections in between them to change the constitution. This allows for changes to be discussed, voted on, and then re-examined to make sure the changes are correct. The new government wants to allow changes to the constitution with merely a national election.
The Icelandic constitution would have be changed before the country could join the EU. So, if the next government intends to engage in membership discussions, then it does not have to send itself home and call for elections, but can simply put EU membership up for national election.
The new government coalition, which has only 80 days to rule until special general elections are held, does not list EU membership on its agenda. However, a special committee assigned to explore EU membership will report back with its findings 10 days before the elections are held.
State Department Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir praised the proposed changes, saying it “means that the nation can decide to share its sovereignty with other nations.” Left-Greem Movement VP Ágúst Ólafur Ágústsson, co-chair of the EU exploratory committee, said it is important to make the changes now to prevent the issue from becoming deadlocked for the next four years.

Iceland will be better advised to stay out of the EU, it will become a vassal state to the big father EU and will “take orders” from the Beast socialist power. Its present demise was planned so that they would be herded like sheep into the EU new world order.

A nation like Island will bring fresh ideas to mommas Europe, and that will be very welcomed. The Euro will bring the stability that Iceland needs to get back on track.
Even Canada is dealing with the EU a free trade plus (including free movement of people), so the world is changing and some people are full of fear of changes, if we would have listen to those people, we would have had stayed hanging on the trees.
