Norway, which last controlled Iceland in the 14th century through the Kalmar federation, may seek to buy up the island nation’s debt so it would not join the European Union.
An op-ed in Norwegian paper Dagens Naeringsliv titled, “About Helping Iceland” quotes Norwegian anti-EU expansion advocate Heming Olaussen, who says that there is a broad consensus in favor of lending Iceland enough money to reduce its government’s debts buy back the rights on the fishing fleet.
The article also quotes Norwegian transport minister Liv Signe Navarsete, who agrees with the idea and says no nation should be forced to join the European Union or take up the euro due to a poor economic situation.
It is not clear if Navarsete is only ready to lend Iceland a helping hand to also help Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, and Turkey avoid joining the EU. Norway could assist its Nordic neighbor by using funds generated through its oil reserves or by raising taxes.
