Last week’s incident involving vigilante group Guardian Angels, which took place almost exactly at the same place a highly-publicized “hate crime” which group leader Curtis Sliwa was quick to capitalize on, evokes memories of faked incidents created Sliwa to generate publicity.
Sliwa himself has admitted to creating and perpetrating at least six hoaxes over the years between 1979 and 1980, according to the 12/14/92 issue of People. In the article, Sliwa recounts an October 1980 publicity stunt where he claimed he was kidnapped by New York City Transit Police detectives and told, “if the Guardian Angels didn’t quit patrolling the subways, they would kill him.”
“Everyone was against us,” Sliwa plaintively explained. “The Mayor, the cops, even the public. We just needed some good attention.”

Faked stories about the Guardian Angels have been an issue since the group began. In October 1983, four former Angels accused Sliwa of dreaming up several incidents, including a sniper attack in a housing project and an assault on Lisa (his then wife) in the group’s headquarters. Sliwa denies he made up any of those stories, insisting he limited his imagination solely to six escapades in 1979 and 1980.
The Right Perspective interviewed former Guardian Angel Magic, who joined the group at its very inception and then quit after 5 years in disgust. During the interview, Magic alleged that Sliwa had faked several incidents, including the highly-publicized rape of then-wife Lisa Sliwa.
Magic also alleged the 1992 assassination attempt on Curtis Sliwa, believed to have been a “hit” put out by mob boss John Gotti, Jr., was in fact the result of an extra-marital affair gone awry.
Curtis Sliwa has yet to respond to the charges made in the interview.

All this based on some publicity stunts 20 years ago by a young person with a dream of ordinary people having some say in the safety of our city. These stunts hurt no one except Sliwa later on in his successful career. Were the stunts a little reckless – maybe – they probably weren’t even necessary to assure the eventual success of a much needed service.

Ok I am an angel. I dont do it because Curtis talked me into it….I hate his radio program. I Disagree with 90% of what he says. Trueth is once a chapter is established he has very little influence over it. Its the members who run things….and they do it because they love the idea of people helping people…they are tired of the apathy they see and want to encourage community involvement. Mr. Sliwa testified at the trial of John Gotti Jr., who was charged in the murder attempt! That was on the tv news, and there way no way to fake that, even if one was crazy enough to try!

The GA’s was not started by Sliwa, his group before the GA’s was called the Magnificent 13. Another group of guys actually started the Guardian Angels. Jeff and Jerry Monroe, Two black Apache guys in the Bronx in NYC who had a Kung Fu School started a patrol called the Shaolin Protectors. After some crime riddled their neighborhood. Those two men at the time 5Th Degree black belts where the force that later changed to the Guardian Angels. In Feb 13 1979 the GA;s was formed because those two men had a fighting match with some members of the Mag 13. The members of the M13 lost and joined the Shaolin Protectors Twin Dragons school of martial arts.
When Sliwa found out about this he asked the Twins about their patrols. Curtis had his patrols on the subways and the twins preexcisting patrols where on the streets. At that time there was no group called the Guardian angels. The two patrols later formed what you know today as the Guardian Angels. But it was called the Mag 13 and the Guardian Angels with Curtis leading his Mag 13 and the Twin dragons leading the Guardian Angels.
After the news caught wind of the GA’s [The Twin Dragons Group] With their choriographed fighting scenes for television. The City went into an uproa and hundreds of inter city kids joined the GA’s with Curtis seeing this he petitioned the Twins to let him be the spokesman for the group and do the PR work. The Twins agreed.
3 years later the twins decide to copyright the name GA’s and found out it was already done by Sliwa behind their back and one of the twin brothers left. Later Jerry Eaglefeather Monroe wrote a safety manual and presented it to sliwa and sliwa and his wife lisa took the information and stole the information and came out with their own version and it became a best seller in Europe.
Sliwa has not told the would the whole truth about the Guardian Angels. After 13 years of unpaid service the second twin left. With many confrontations with Sliwa to repent and tell the truth about the group. Sliwa’s reply, I will don’t worry they will know. I’ll take care and fix it. Sliwa never did.
Sliwa did many other things before and after that the twin dragons know about that they have held back from telling the public. So while they truly believe in the Guardian Angels purpose. They do not trust Mr. Sliwa.
The Group is needed for sure, but just be careful of Curtis he will say anything and do anything he has to to keep his name in the lime light and famous and keep the money rolling in.
