Undisclosed tax issues have forced Nancy Killefer to withdraw her nomination to be the first US chief performance officer, a position created by Barack Obama to make government more accountable for the money it spends.
Killefer, a former assistant Treasury secretary in the Clinton administration and director at management-consulting firm McKinsey & Co., was reportedly vetted for the position by Obama staff. In her resignation letter, Killefer called Obama’s agenda “urgent” and her issues involving unreported DC unemployment tax could create a “distraction” to that agenda.
Killefer marks the third Obama nomination to be stung by tax scandal. HHS nominee Tom Daschle is battling tax evasion charges and Timmothy Geithner successfully evaded tax charges to become Treasury Secretar.
