An 18-yr old stewardess from South African Airways claims Johanesburg metro police demanded she pay them R4,000 (US$400) or they would throw her in prison “where she would be raped by other inmates”.
The stewardess was on her way to work at the OR Tambo International Airport at 3:40am in the middle of a torrential rainstorm when two cop cars and a van allegedly flagged her down. One officer approached her car, shone a flashlight into the car and said he was going to arrest her, and that in jail women get “raped and beaten”.
The woman refused to leave her car and asked why she was going to be arrested. The officer became belligerent and demanded R4,000. The woman had only R200 in her wallet and offered that to the officer.
When the woman told the officer her father is a high-ranking traffic officer in Durban, the cop took her money and told her to go.
The woman is back home in Durban and is recovering from her ordeal. “My daughter is such a shy and timid girl, and this incident has really terrified her,” said her father. “When citizens see police officers, they are supposed to feel safe and protected, but these corrupt officers have instilled fear into her.”
Joburg metro police spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said they were taking the matter seriously. “We are aware of the charges and are involved with our investigations. We view these charges as really serious and will make sure that everything possible is done to get to the bottom of this. We will keep the victim and her father informed.”
The woman’s father said he is conducting his own investigation of the matter. “I have questioned the metro police chief and taken this to the minister’s office. These vehicles have tracker devices, and they must work fast to catch these culprits.”
