Some 60 demonstrators protested in front of the Hilton Reykjavík Nordica hotel Wednesday night, banging pots, pans and drums in disapproval of Iceland‘s role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
300 guests are staying at the Nordica hotel and will participate in a NATO summit meeting scheduled for Thursday. Police officials anticipated the demonstration and were fully prepared.
The protestors, carrying signs reading “PEACE” and “No Army” got out of hand, with police arresting six and using pepper spray to quell the rowdy crowd.
Two additional protesters were arrested for burning a NATO flag outside the hotel. While It is legal to burn any flag in Iceland except for the Icelandic and NATO flags, the police chief on duty said the flag burners had crossed their security line. The arresting officers were not sure which of the two had burned the flag.
The subject of the NATO summit, which was planned for before Monday’s collapse of the Icelandic government, remains unchanged, said Icelandic State Department spokeswoman Urður Gunnarsdóttir. Both Icelandic President Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson and State Department Minister Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir will address the summit, which will discuss the ongoing changes in Alliance countries, and how the Alliance should deal with countries outside the group, such as Russia, Finland and Norway.
