No EU Referendum, Possible Wealth Freeze For Iceland

Left-Green Movement leader Steingrímur J. Sigfússon has announced that Iceland will not hold a referendum on EU membership this Spring, when special general elections are to be held.

The new red-green socialist government has decided to take a more pragmatic stance on the issue due to matters with the IMF remaining unresolved at that time.

Sigfússon also confirmed the possibility of freezing the assets of the wealthy. “This is one of those subjects which are on the table and we are discussing,” he said.

“Such authority is known in situations like this to ensure that valuables will not move out of the national economy,” Sigfússon said.  He denies that such actions would contradict the Icelandic constitution, as the matter would be reviewed by lawyers.

The LGM will draft a bill on the matter and send it to Parliament.
