celandic President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson has said a change of leadership at the country’s Central Bank is one of the “pillars” of the new socialist government.
Current Central Bank chief Davið Oddsson has become one of the objects for public rage after the Icelandic banks and stock market collapsed last October.
“In discussions and deliberations with leaders of the parties which will form the new government in a few days, it is absolutely clear that one of the pillars of the new program will be a change in the leadership of the central bank,” President Grimsson told the BBC.
The Social Democrat Alliance has called for the Central Bank governors to step down. The SDA has also proposed sweeping changes at the Bank which include a series of committees and councils to regulate its monetary policy and appointing future Central Bank governors on a basis of international standards in tune with the IMF.
